The mountains are so steep and the upper reaches are so exposed and isolated that a very dense cloud layer can form quite easily – just like the ground fog that comes from below. This view looks back towards the highway and up toward the peaks of Mount Baker and Mount Rainier. This image was taken at about 07:45 on a misty morning on a hike up to the Cross Pass. This is a great time of day to hike and see the fog; the sun is coming up quickly but the afternoon sun makes it difficult to take pictures. This image was taken at about 10:15 at the top of the Cross Pass parking lot on the first part of the hike to the top of the pass. The beauty of these photographs is that each time I go out and take the first ones, I’m pretty confident I’ll get more and better images at the same location at the same time of day. (I don’t always get that lucky) However, this time the fog got in the way. I looked out the window and saw a thick sheet of fog floating above the trees. I didn’t try to photograph through the fog, but rather just hoped to get the subtle changes in cloud and light that would help me tell the story of the sky, mountain and clouds. In these images the foreground is the ground fog. The sun was rising through the fog on the left side, and I wondered if the fog would dissipate for any length of time. But, then the sun would start to grow higher and the fog would slowly disappear. It was a complete perfect way to start the day. This is the view down into the valley and up towards the top of the pass. In this example of a mist image, the sun started to break through in the east over the valley, and I knew I’d get great light for the sunlit views. I walked the 17 miles up to the top 648931e174
